Level UP! - Beginning a New Chapter

Thank you for being part of my email audience! I am excited to announce that I have officially graduated from Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design and now have my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Game Art!

What is Game Art? It is the creation of visual assets used in video games and film. Game art can be anything from 2D concept art to digital 3D models and animation such as you would see in Pixar movies and more. It is primarily digital art and utilizes a variety of software. There are several steps to get an idea from paper to a moving interactive game or film, and now I have the foundation needed to better understand this process and work towards contributing to these kinds of projects.

So now what? Well, I have already been applying to several internships at game studios, film studios, and even advertising and marketing companies which use these same skills. However, it is a highly competitive field and unfortunately, my portfolio isn't up to an acceptable standard yet to compete well for a professional position, and I have not been selected to move forward with any company yet. I have some school projects to show what I can do, but I need more projects of my own original creativity, so I am working toward expanding my portfolio with my own projects. In the meantime, I am returning to full time work in an unrelated field until I can boost my skills and body of work more thoroughly.

As my skills improve with practice, I will be sharing with you my latest work as well as sharing what I have learned so far from past projects and experience. What would help me a lot in determining what to share is if you would fill out the survey near the end of this email, or reply to this email, and let me know what interests you most and what you'd like to see more of in the content that I share.

Here are a few ideas to start, so let me know by clicking on a preference below:

  • Select this option if you would like to see more displays and modeling of available designs, clothing, accessories, wall prints, and more that are available at my different online shops, as well as receive extra discounts and advanced promotions.
• ​I am interested in your artist journey and tips you have for other artists looking to improve or go pro​
  • Select this option if you would like me to share ideas and best practices I have learned as I have gone through art school and as I work on improving myself toward a professional artist career. I will share about training I recommend, practice tips, tools I use, and even some side personal development that could help improve ourselves overall, not just with art, for a more well-rounded approach to reaching goals.
• ​I am interested in your creative process and how you create your designs​
  • Select this option if you are interested in seeing how I create my projects and designs from start to finish. If you like watching speed paint videos or brief glimpses of the tools I use in action, this option will let me know to make more documented snapshots of my works in progress. I will also share some of my perspective as the artist from time to time including challenges I ran into and what inspired me to make what I created.
• ​I am interested in game art specifically, and want to know more about how to create art for video games or film, and how game development works​
  • Select this option if you're all about video games and movies and want to know how artists make the visuals that go into interactive entertainment! NOTE: I am still new to this field as well, but if this interests you, I will be happy to share with you what I learn as I learn it. If you select this option, I will share more of my concept art and 3D modeling practice and projects, insights into the overall process of developing an idea into a visual asset that can then be imported into a game engine for an interactive video game experience, etc. I will create speed modeling videos as well as some of the more technical side of development such as creative processes, texturing and game shader necessities, and possibly even display how some of the programming works (limited). I am not a programmer, but there is still some technical coding that even I need to perform as a game artist, which I can summarize for you a little bit.

I have other skills and experience I am happy to share as well for those interested. Did you know I have a degree in Japanese and lived in Japan for nearly four years? I have done some tutoring in beginning Japanese as well, and I am happy to share a few insights on that if you want. Curious about military life? I served in the Air Force for six years as an enlisted airman and a military police officer. Want to know about my day to day tools for organization, personal development, or maybe my spiritual life as a Christian and my recommendations for those? I have encountered a lot of tools and lessons I can share from over the years. Whatever interests you outside of the scope of the other options listed above, please share with me. I'd love to know how I can best serve you and give you helpful tools, resources, and knowledge to sate your interests and boost your achievements!
